Update on parking: we have been graciously given permission (elks) to use the back parking lot adjacent to the ball fields for this walk. The address has been updated. It is 777 south street in Tewksbury.We will be organizing a site walk of the historic Poplar Street well fields because physically walking the area provides important context that maps and reports alone cannot. Seeing the proximity of the former municipal wells, monitoring wells, surrounding land use, and the Sutton Brook Superfund site helps illustrate how contamination of a former public water supply could have occurred and why this area remains a concern today. This walk is intended to be informational and observational only.
Participants should wear boots or sturdy high top hiking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. We will be staying on established walking trails and will not touch, disturb, or collect anything. Our goal is to observe and better understand the landscape, leaving nothing behind except footprints. Dogs are welcome as long as they are leashed and have a calm temperament. Please plan ahead to properly remove pet waste, as this area has already experienced enough contamination and we do not intend to add to it in any way
