Step back in time and explore one of Maryland’s most significant historic landmarks. The Historic Preservation Commission invites you to attend the St. Mary’s City Historical Chapel Lecture, featuring Ruth M. Mitchell, Manager of Archaeological Services, for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the Brick Chapel at Historic St. Mary’s City.Originally constructed by Jesuit missionaries in the 1660s, the Brick Chapel stood for only a few decades before being dismantled and repurposed. Centuries later, archaeologists uncovered its foundation, leading to a careful reconstruction of the building. While the exterior was completed several years ago, a major milestone was reached in September 2025 with the installation of the interior exhibits.
This lecture will highlight the archaeological discoveries and historical research that informed how the chapel’s interior was interpreted and reconstructed. Attendees will learn about key features such as the altar, tabernacle, original brick foundation, 17th-century lead coffins, and the materials and finishes that brought this sacred space back to life.
