Please join us on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the re-opening of the Town of Davidson Historic Gymnasium at 251 South Street.
The Davidson School Gymnasium, located behind the Davidson Town Hall and Community Center, is a locally designated historical landmark. Designed by architect Willard G. Rogers, the gymnasium was completed in 1937 as part of a countywide school construction program funded largely through the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works. Two other northern Mecklenburg County projects completed during this period included the Ada Jenkins School and a new 12-room schoolhouse in Cornelius.
The 5,230-square-foot building features a classically inspired design with arched windows, solid masonry walls, a main floor, and original wooden bleachers.
The Historic Gymnasium will serve as the Town of Davidson’s first indoor recreation center. The renovation project is an excellent example of adaptive reuse and historic preservation.
The Town of Davidson selected the design-build team of Balfour-Beatty and Creech & Associates for this project. Additional information about the project is available on the Town of Davidson website: www.townofdavidson.org/HistoricGymRenovation.
This project is supported by Mecklenburg County with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Town of Davidson 2021 and 2023 General Obligation Bonds.
