Women’s History Month is an annual celebration held in March to honor the contributions and achievements of women throughout history. The origins of Women’s History Month trace back to International Women's Day on March 8th, which was established in the early 20th century. In 1981, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution recognizing Women’s History Week, and in 1987, after petitions from the National Women’s History Project, Congress designated March as Women’s History Month.
