12 ApostlesThe trails starts at Njabini following the Elephant Hill trail Markers
The starting point which is 3km into the trail- the bamboo Gate-
The point of Desperado , the Tail and the walking on the back of the elephant towards the summit . On a beautiful morning the views of Mount Kenya from here are to die for.
As we near the summit shy a few meters we take a right into a steep descent into the Kinagop Valley- the Kinangop peaks as always very inviting and further right a set of prominent peaks that we have now come to know as the 12 Apostles
Between Elephant Hill summit ridge and Kinangop peaks heather and boggy moorland awaits and can be very challenging to maneuver when it’s wet
This is the reason we are her so we take the dip and walk on the floor of the valley for about 4km. This slightly above the foot of Kinangop peaks and take another right turn.
This time it’s a right that is less taken because only a few has witnessed this magic.
We walk the fresh moorland crossing streams and river as we approach the 12 Apostles peaks
Up the fore summit is an exposed section up for about 60m to the top and from here looking back is Mount Kinangop. A view you have never seen before- from her flows tens of streams and rivers. Waterfall thundering down cheering you up 12 Apostles highest Point.
After about 30minutes you are at the base of the summit - another exposed 5 meter to summit. Enjoy the views and soon after below the summit is probably the most defining feature of the peaks ‘The Eye’ . A big whole just below the summit and if your vision is quite good it’s actually observable from Elephant Hill.
You have a few minutes here to rest and have a snack/lunch and take photos. Soon after we retrace our steps back to Njabini in high spirits having achieved what has been elusive for many over the years.
