Hike: Silent Creek

Details: Things should be quite toasty by the end of August, so why not cool off on an easy casual hike in the Cascades? This nearly totally flat hike near the south shore of Diamond Lake is a rare departure from some of our “normal” hikes that typically leave you out of breath. Instead, we’ll softly speak in hushed tones as we meander along the very scenic Silent Creek, and save our breath for the “oohs” and “ahhs” that will surely be uttered.

Difficulty level: Easy
Distance: About 6 miles
Route: Starting near the south shore boat ramp, we’ll follow the paved bike trail west. After a quick one-mile loop around Teal Lake and Horse Lake, we’ll head toward Silent Creek and go upstream to our turnaround point. On the way back, we’ll continue up the bike trail to a lovely meadow that makes for an ideal lunch spot with views of Mt. Thielsen. We’ll then return to the boat ramp.
Pluses: A measly 75 ft elevation gain. Paved paths with views of Mt Thielsen and Mt Bailey. The mosquitoes have all but disappeared.
Minuses: Other people strolling and biking the bike path. More of a long walk than a vigorous hike.

On the day of the hike: Meet at 8 am in the Douglas County Courthouse parking lot off of Fowler St., right behind the library building.
Bring water, lunch, and appropriate clothing for hiking.
If you are riding with somebody, be prepared to share gas expenses with your driver.
Please do not attend if you feel sick, are coughing, or have a fever.
The club hikes every other Saturday, rain or shine. Hiking is free, everybody is welcome.
