Our 2nd hike of the 2025 spring hiking season is Hike and Feast at Marshall Swamp on January 25th, 2025 at 9am.
Marshall Swamp is located off of the Ocklawaha River within the Cross Florida Greenway; a conservation land and wildlife corridor spanning from Jacksonville to Crystal River. The Marshall Swamp is 1 out of 7 of Florida's "true biological swamps”, unlike other wetlands in Florida that fall under different classifications. After all, we do have many different kinds of wetlands. Yet, Marshall stands out among the rest for its unique arrangement of plants and animals, as well as the geographical characteristics that make it so. These kinds of wetlands are becoming a rarity in Florida, especially as developments of our natural lands continues.
Our hike will take place on the Florida Trail; one of our country’s great national scenic trails. While we anticipate the terrain to be mostly dry when we hike it, it is still a swamp, so make sure you’ve got a nice pair of water-proof or resistant boots for this one! This environment is home to various types of amphibians, reptiles, wading birds, predatory birds, fish, deer and so much more. We may even see wild monkeys! Once threatened by the prospect of a barge canal, the Marshall Swamp now thrives undisturbed. Hand in hand with the Ocklawaha River, this place stands as a shining example of what Florida is and has always been.
We can’t wait to return to this beautiful place with friends and strangers alike. We know that once you walk through the dimly lit canopy of trees and feel the teaming life around you, you too will be as captivated by it as we are! After our hike, we’ll be dining on an absolutely delicious "Low Country Feast" inspired by the traditional cuisine of the American Southeast. This meal will be prepared and served under the pavilion at the recreation area where we will begin and end the hike, courtesy of our culinary team Bon Voisin Chef!
