Higher Ground Society Freedom School 2026: Daphne (FREE)
About this Event
Welcome to the Higher Ground Society Freedom School 2026: Daphne event! Join us at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, August 8, 2025 at 10:00 AM (Central Time) for a day filled with learning, growth, and community. This is a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and expand your knowledge in a supportive environment. Tuskegee University associate professor of English, Dr. Zanice Bond, will lead us in exploring Civil Rights Movement history and its implications for the current moment. Attendees will be (re)introduced to the Gomillion v. Lightfoot case that originated in Tuskegee, Alabama. We will discuss key concepts such as voting rights, gerrymandering, redlining, and the 15th Amendment and also explore the role and responsibilities of the local individual/community. The session will feature hands-on activities and small intergenerational groups, and will conclude by reading and discussing selected poems from Reparations Now! written by Alabama’s youngest and first African American poet laureate, Ashley M. Jones. Don't miss out on this chance to be a part of something special. A light lunch will be provided, so registration is required. See you there!
