About this Event
Welcome to the Higher Ground Society Freedom School 2025: Bay Minette event! Join us at Bay Minette Public Library on August 23, 2025 at 10:00 AM (Central Time) for a day filled with learning, growth, and community. This is a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and expand your knowledge in a supportive environment. Auburn University associate professor of History, Dr. David Carter will be leading us in exploring Civil Rights Movement history and its implications for the current moment. During the session entitled "Pressed to the Wall . . . But Fighting Back: Histories of Black Self-Assertion During and After the Jim Crow Era” attendees will encounter the rich history of Black resistance in the face of state-sanctioned discrimination, mob violence, and economic marginalization during the “long emancipation” from Reconstruction through the era of Jim Crow and on into the Civil Rights and more recent decades. We will discuss how Blacks found myriad ways to endure and resist in the long Black Freedom Struggle, discussing well-known activists like Ida B. Wells-Barnett and W.E.B. DuBois as well as lesser-known individuals, organizations, and institutions. Featuring opportunities for small-group discussion and using a wealth of multimedia materials, the workshop will also focus on the importance of cultural “torchbearers” who forged traditions like the Blues, jazz, freedom songs, poetry, fiction, and art. Don't miss out on this chance to be a part of something special. See you there!
