About this Event

Resilient citizenship and resilient education: Higher education in Latin America in times of crisis

Speaker, Dr Paula Leal, Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana

This seminar discusses conceptualisations and practices of resilient higher education, focusing on the Latin American and Chilean contexts. In the context of environmental and political crisis and in the face of socioeconomic and technological inequalities in the region, the seminar emphasises the need for higher education that equips students to adapt, resist and view adversity as an opportunity. By embracing Paulo Freire's critical consciousness, empowerment, and hope principles, the discussion explores how higher education could create learning and coexistence environments that foster resilient educational communities empowered to transform society. The seminar also presents recommendations for how higher education can enhance the development of resilience.

About the speaker:

Dr Paula Leal Tejeda is a Chilean social worker and Doctor of Philosophy in Education (University of Sussex), currently an academic, researcher and Head of the School of Social Work at the Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana, Chile. Dr Leal has conducted research on citizenship, citizen education and higher education, focusing on interpreting the voices of students and other actors within educational institutions. Committed to contributing to the development of higher education that addresses both contemporary and future challenges, Dr Leal is currently exploring resilient citizenship and resilient higher education. Through her research, she aims to revise and strengthen educational practices at universities to build resilient educational communities and empower citizens.

This seminar is organised by the Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, in collaboration with the Cambridge Latin American Research in Education Collective (CLAREC).
