About the Rides:
Day 1, Harboro’ Rocks and Minninglow
This route runs at 13 miles from the campsite. Outbound takes us a good distance along the High Peak Trail, through Hopton Tunnel and up the incline. Points of interest along the way include Harboro’ Rocks, views down to Carsington Water and a good close up look at Minninglow neolithic burial ground as we make the turn onto the byways that loop us back towards home. This route offers plenty of opportunities to canter along broad trail verges and up some super uphill grassland bridleways which connect us back onto the trail.
Day 2, Black Rocks
Running at a more manageable 6.5 miles for day 2, this route again sets out on the High Peak Trail. Heading out in the opposite direction to day 1, we drop down Middleton Incline and follow the trail down to enjoy one of the best views in the area across the valley to Matlock. Offering plenty of variety, there is a woodland section and some lovely uphill grassy fields which provide the opportunity for some fast work. The route rejoins the trail to conclude. This route is rich in historical interest whic your guide will tell you about en route.
Points to note:
Access from the campsite to the High Peak Trail and back is down a short section of a quite busy B road. This section will be escorted by a vehicle to hold the traffic.
There are short sections of road on both ride routes. This is predominantly on small lanes but there are portions on the day 1 route particularly where it is possible HGVs may be encountered.
The day 1 route passes close by a clay pigeon shooting ground which may be operational on the day of the ride.
Livestock is likely on grassland sections of both routes, and around the campsite.
The High Peak Trail is multi-user and it’s likely that cyclists, walkers with dogs and off road wheelchairs may be encountered.
Both routes include bridge crossings on the trail which have reasonable elevation.
Day 1 route includes Hopton Tunnel both on the outbound and return section. This 100m section of tunnel is completely unlit.
