High Commission of Trinidad & Tobago: World Steelpan Day 2026 Celebrations
About this Event
Declared by the United Nations and observed annually on 11 August, World Steelpan Day recognises the global significance of the steelpan - the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago and the only major musical instrument invented in the 20th century.
To mark this special occasion, we are hosting an indoor celebration featuring a Steelpan Exhibition and Lecture exploring the history of the steelpan, its pioneers, its role in community development, and its lasting cultural impact. Our Learn to Play Pan Workshop will introduce participants to the different notes of the steelpan and teach them how to play a simple melody and song. Following the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to showcase what they have learned before enjoying a live steelpan performance.

- "A History of the Steel Pan: A Diasporic Perspective" Lecture by Haroun Shah – 2:00 PM
- Learn to Play Pan Workshop – 4:00 PM
- Pan Jam: Steelband Showcase – 5:30 PM
Admission is free, but advance registration is recommended. Due to limited capacity, entry will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to ticket holders.
