Hidden Waters: Discovering Florida's Freshwater Wetlands

Explore the beauty and importance of Florida’s freshwater wetlands on a guided nature walk through Allapattah Flats Wildlife Management Area. Once a vast seasonal marsh that historically connected the Lake Okeechobee watershed to the St. Lucie River, Allapattah Flats is home to a rich mosaic of wet prairies, marshes, and pine flatwoods. During this walk, we’ll explore how these wetlands store and filter water, support wildlife, and play a vital role in Florida’s natural landscape. This program will be led by Professional Wetland Scientist and Martin County Senior Planner Maddie Gierczak.

DETAILS

FREE program, but reservations are required

This program will begin at 9:00am and last until approximately 11:00am

The length of this walk will be up to 2 miles on natural uneven surfaces and sand

Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear

Bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray

Minors (under 18) must be accompanied by an adult

No pets

All participants will be required to sign waivers that will be provided at the start of the program
