Please join Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table for its November 2025 dinner-program at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, November 12th at Camp Hill United Methodist Church, 601 Washington Street, Harpers Ferry, WV. Our program will feature historian Doug Dobbs speaking on “An Evening with John Brown”. Doug Dobbs grew up in New Jersey and Delaware, attended college and graduate school in California and spent three years of further graduate study at Virginia Tech in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy. He came to Maryland in 1995 and ended up teaching US History for almost 20 years at Broadfording Christian Academy outside of Hagerstown, MD. In 1997 Doug became a Civil War reenactor, his first event being the 135th Antietam. Doug has also served as an event manager and organizer over the last 15 years.
About 2015 Doug developed a special interest in Captain John Brown due to his friendship with Dr. Ed Maliskas, author of "From John Brown to James Brown." His research has taken him across the country, from Brown's birthplace in Connecticut to his boyhood home in Hudson, OH. On his visit to Osawatomie, KS he struck up a friendship with the Director of the John Brown Museum, Grady Atwater. Two years ago Grady invited Doug to portray Capt. Brown at their reenactment of the Battle of Osawatomie. In February, 2025 Doug was invited by the Gettysburg Foundation to portray Capt. Brown as part of their Winter Lecture Series, along with his friend Nathan Richardson, who ably portrays Frederick Douglass. Over the summer in 2025 Doug visited Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts as well as North Elba, NY. Most recently Doug has returned from an extended trip to Kansas including his second appearance as Capt. Brown in Osawatomie.
