HERStory Matters - Black Women Leading in Uncertain Times

HERStory Matters is a dynamic speaker series designed to explore the multi-layered barriers facing Black women in nonprofit leadership. This event seeks to address how the philanthropic community must show up for and prioritize the needs of Black women executives, who lead with multiple challenges, immense sacrifice, and unwavering commitment, yet often with fewer resources.

In the face of political rollbacks and a shifting nonprofit landscape, Black women continue to lead with resilience and purpose. This year’s theme highlights how Black women in nonprofit leadership roles are navigating uncertainty, redefining resilience, and driving change, all while maintaining their vision for a more inclusive and equitable future.

Historically, the nonprofit sector has primarily served marginalized communities and communities of color, who have been disproportionately affected by a system that was never designed to include them. Many of the United States' nonprofits are led by individuals, institutions, and foundations that do not represent their beneficiaries. As a result, Black Executive Directors often find themselves in roles where they feel isolated, as the only person of color in leadership and the sole voice for the beneficiaries they serve.

Black women leaders in the nonprofit sector face even more barriers and challenges, particularly regarding access to resources and support. With fewer resources, Black women-led organizations are tasked with serving the most vulnerable and disadvantaged populations, often with the least amount of funding. Despite these challenges, Black women continue to lead with purpose, power, and persistence, reshaping the nonprofit landscape in their image.
