The Old Town Hall replaced a 17th-century market house, which was a direct result of a charter granted by Henry VIII in 1539. Designed by George Low in the elegant Jacobean style, the new building was a striking symbol of civic pride. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with five bays facing the High Street, featuring a portico with Corinthian columns and a balcony. It was a bustling hub of commerce and administration, with a corn market and corn exchange, as well as an annual wool fair. The Butchers' Shambles and the weekly plait and annual job fairs were held nearby, making the area the vibrant heart of the town.
