Africatown Heritage House is hosting its April 2025 Heritage Lecture Series event, a collection of speeches designed to touch on topics related to the Black experience. Eric F. Finley will present his lecture entitled: "Living in the Present Overshadowed by the Past."DATE/TIME: Thursday, April 10, 2025 | 5:30pm
ABOUT ERIC F. FINLEY: Eric F. Finley, a fourth-generation native of Mobile, Alabama, traces his family’s roots to 1870. Raised in Mobile’s thriving African American business community, Eric’s family history includes proprietors of health service businesses dating back to 1918 in Mobile.
Eric is an alumnus of Xavier University, and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Retired in 2017 from an international communication company after 22 years. His lifelong dedication to preserving African American history is evident through his role as Tour Director and storyteller with the Friends of the African American Heritage Trail, highlighting Africatown and Mobile’s cultural legacy.
Eric is an active leader in multiple African American civic and social organizations. As a former President of the Utopia Fellowship Foundation and the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association, he helps to empower college students and community members to excel.
Eric volunteers extensively on initiatives that honor and preserve Mobile’s rich African American history, including:
- Clean-Up the Northside Bottom Area
- Africatown Tours Development Committee
- Davis Avenue Remembrance and Revitalization Committee
- Mobile County Community Remembrance Project Marker Ceremony Plan Committee
- Association for the Study of African American Life & History (ASALH)
- 23 Site Civil Rights Trail Committee
- Dr. E.B. Goode Documentary – Co-Producer
- Featured in a C-SPAN vignette in 2020
In 2022, Eric established Bring Your Own Book, LLC (BYOB).
Eric’s passion for storytelling and historical preservation continues to make a lasting impact on his community.
The History Museum of Mobile and Africatown Heritage House invite the public to attend this FREE Heritage Lecture Series.
