Marrickville Town Hall | Marrickville, NS
About this Event
Sydney High School Teacher and local historian Vasilis Vasilas will present a short history of Marrickville’s Greek community, while local Dina Fakas cook the Greek delicacy, spanakopita.
The Greek migration and settlement story and Marrickville are synonymous to the success of Australian multiculturalism. One aspect of the Greek migrant generation’s integration into the broader Australian community is the impact of the Greek cuisine on the Australian diet and tastes. Foods like the spanakopita, or spinach pie. may have been an important link for migrants to their homeland, Greece, but it was also a transformative link of acceptance in their adopted homeland Australia. Complimentary piece of spanakopita + water handed to each member of the audience.
This event is supported by an ALIA (Australian Library and Information Association) Community Cohesion grant supporting Inner West Community to Build Protect and Grow.
The Greek Festival of Sydney and is part of the National Trust Heritage Festival.
