Herbalism in the Garden with Zaree Ross

Description: Join us as Scholar Zaree Ross explores the history of African American herbalism from enslavement to the present. The event will also explore common herbs and remedies that can be used in the Georgia Piedmont region.

Herbalism, or the practice of using plants and plant-based extracts for healing, has been practiced for thousands of years to support physical and mental well-being. From traditional Chinese medicine to ancient Greek remedies, herbs have long been believed to ease symptoms of anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. As interest in natural treatments grows, many turn to herbal remedies as alternatives or supplements to conventional care.

What to expect: Amongst the garden beds at E.M.B.A.R.C. Youth Farm is a treasure trove of herbs and plants. Learn some practical planting ideas for your own home garden as well as create your own take-away goodie in this exciting new program.

Program leader: Your guide will be Zaree Ross and Ranger Rachel Roberts from the EMBARC Youth Farm.

Where to meet: Find Ranger Rachel in the garden under the red umbrellas.

What to bring: If you want to take notes, please bring a notebook and something to write with. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle and clothes you are ok getting dirty (just in case).

Restrooms: There is only one restroom in the headquarters office.

Recommended ages: This program content is designed for adults and teens.

Weather contingency: This program will be h eld, rain or shine, unless conditions are dangerous.
