Herbal Medicine Making Day
I've opened a new date for the Autumn workshop: 7th November, for both the webinar and the in person practical day.
If you missed the first run, or just fancy an afternoon making your own herbal medicine, this is your chance to join me.
This season's workshop is all about digestion, and more specifically, about the quiet, constant work the gut does that so much of our wellbeing rests on. There's an old saying I come back to often: what happens in the gut doesn't stay in the gut. So many of the body's systems, from mood to immunity to how well we absorb nutrients in the first place, are in ongoing conversation with the gut and its microbiome.
Looking after digestion isn't a small or niche thing. It might be one of the best places to start if you want to support your whole health.
In the five element tradition, digestion sits with the earth element, the part of us concerned with nourishment, absorption and feeling grounded. Earth is the element of harvest and hearth, of taking in what sustains us and trusting our own ability to process and use it well. Autumn is a lovely time to sit with that, as the natural world around us is doing exactly this kind of gathering in.
On the practical day you'll make four herbal preparations to take home, plus one extra for the kitchen. None of them are complicated, which is rather the point. I want you to leave with remedies you'll actually use, not just admire on a shelf.
- An Angelica Oxymel, a warming vinegar and honey tonic that gently wakes digestion up before meals
- A Swedish Bitters Tincture, the traditional eleven herb formula.
- A Mallow Root and Licorice Glycerite, a soothing, sweet preparation for a gut lining that needs a little looking after
- A Warming Digestive Massage Oil, blended with ginger, sweet fennel and cardamom, for the times support needs to come from the outside in
- And as a bonus, my own Digestive Seed Mix, a toasted fennel, coriander, sesame and cumin condiment you can make again and again at home
There's something genuinely satisfying about bottling, blending and labeling your own medicine, and I think you'll find the afternoon as enjoyable as it is useful. It's hands on, a little bit messy in the nicest way, and you'll leave with a small apothecary of your own making.
The 7th November date covers both parts of the day: a 10am webinar covering the herbs, the theory and the stories behind them, followed by the in person practical session from 1pm where we make everything together. You're welcome to join just the webinar one or both the webinar and in person
