Join us for a Miracle Mile Walk, a guided foraging and trail study experience through Hedges Creek County Park in East Patchogue. This lesser-known preserve offers a quiet mix of wooded trails, wetlands, and brush habitat, making it an ideal setting for deeper observation and exploration. We will cover approximately 1 mile over about 2 hours at a steady, unhurried pace.
As we move through the park and along the creek, we will explore:
- Edible and usable plants in active spring growth
- Natural materials and resources found along the trail
- Animal sign, bird activity, and wildlife movement
- The relationship between wetland, forest, and upland environments
- Subtle seasonal shifts that shape the landscape
This walk continues the practice of ground study; learning a specific place over time through observation, interaction, and return visits. Participants are encouraged to take notes, sketch, or simply track what they notice as they begin building their own Miracle Mile.
We’ll also introduce simple tools and apps that can support your learning in the field, helping you identify plants, record observations, and build confidence over time without replacing your own awareness.
This experience is guided, safe, and beginner-friendly. No experience is needed.
What to Bring
- Dress for the weather; layers are recommended
- Sturdy, waterproof footwear; trails may be muddy or uneven
- Optional: small bag or basket for gathering (if appropriate)
- Optional: notebook and pencil for journaling or field notes
- Optional: simple tools such as a knife, clippers, or small trowel

- This is a family-friendly walk; participants should be comfortable covering uneven terrain over the full distance
- All foraging will be guided and discussed before any harvesting takes place
- We practice respectful, ethical interaction with the land
- This is a natural, unimproved preserve; there are no restrooms or paved paths

Hedges Creek County Park features quiet, wooded trails with access to the creek for observation and photography. The landscape includes a mix of wetlands, upland forest, and brush habitat, supporting a wide range of plant and animal life. The park is part of Suffolk County’s efforts to protect sensitive environmental corridors along the South Shore.
