**Heart Trio** is William Parker, Cooper-Moore, and Hamid Drake — three of the most important figures in creative music, united by over thirty years of deep collaboration. Their debut album, Heart Trio (AUM Fidelity, 2024), was released to widespread acclaim.
Parker plays guembri, shakuhachi, duduk, and bamboo flutes. Cooper-Moore plays his hand-crafted ashimba, bass diddley-bow, fretless banjo, and mouth-bow. Drake plays frame drum (primary), drums, and percussion. All music is collectively improvised at the moment of creation.

William Parker is one of the most prolific and visionary figures in creative music. Described by the Village Voice as “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time,” Parker is not just an improviser, writer, and poet but a prolific composer who has written operas, oratorios, ballets, film scores, and soliloquies for solo instruments. He has participated in approximately 500 recordings with over 50 albums under his own leadership.
His music and his extraordinary bass playing maintain high standards whether he plays in small ensembles or large bands, never turning his back on innovation and spontaneous creativity. Fascinated by Eastern cultures, he collects instruments from all over the world, which he poetically and skillfully incorporates into his performances. At seventy-five, he remains at the forefront of creative music — a master musician, a spiritual activist, and a living bridge between generations.
**Cooper-Moore**
Cooper-Moore is a composer-improviser, instrumentalist, designer and builder of musical instruments, and music educator, living and working in New York City. A native of the Piedmont area of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Cooper-Moore began studying piano at age eight. Moving to New York in 1973, he transformed a five-floor Canal Street building into an artist live-in/work space, making possible numerous experimentations between performing and visual artists.
He has built an extensive instrument collection using paper, bamboo, metal, wood, and acrylic, and most often performs with his ashimba (a type of xylophone), bass diddley-bow, horizontal hoe-handle harp, three-stringed fretless banjo, and electric mouth-bow. A pivotal figure in the NYC Loft Jazz era of the 1970s, he co-founded the collective Apogee with David S. Ware, whose first group opened for Sonny Rollins at the Village Vanguard in 1973. He joined William Parker’s In Order To Survive in the early 1990s. Recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at Vision Festival 2017.
**Hamid Drake**
Hamid Drake is among the most sought-after and spiritually grounded drummers in the world. Born in Louisiana and raised in Evanston, Illinois, he came of age through the AACM and forged a lifelong musical relationship with Don Cherry, traveling through Europe and deepening his understanding of music’s transformational possibilities.
He is a master of jazz language but also an expert in oriental percussion and Caribbean rhythms. His collaborators include Peter Brötzmann, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Yusef Lateef, David Murray, Bill Laswell, Misha Mengelberg, and William Parker. Drake has adopted North and West African idioms and Indian influences as well as reggae and Latin American music. He often plays without sticks, using his hands to create particular sound rhythms. His organic and powerful drumming on the frame drum often leaves room for singing and slow, cadenced recitation.
