Healthy Eating for Type 2 Diabetes Prevention and Management

Healthy Eating for Type 2 Diabetes Prevention and Management is a targeted diet and lifestyle education programme to complement the physical activity focus of the Champions for Change Physical Therapy for Type 2 Diabetes programme.

Participants will engage in fortnightly 1-hour sessions covering key topics around healthy eating, diabetes prevention and behaviour change.

Key Topics:

Session 1: Introduction of the programme. Different types of Diabetes and participants experiences

Session 2: Eat Well Plate: Introduce participants to the EatWell Plate as a concept

Session 3: Fats and Physical activity: discussing fats and introducing different types and fats. Discussion about Physical activity

Session 4: Salt & Label reading: Impact on health of salt and understanding label reading

Session 5: Sugar and Meal planning: Impact of sugar on health and meal planning activity

Session 6: Recap of each previous topic.

Session 7: Food Waste; how we can reduce food waste (portion control)

Session 8: Local food access and community support in RBG

The sessions will provide participants with the knowledge and confidence to make better food choices to support their health goals and physical training outcomes.

Target Audience:

• Adults and/or young people at risk of, or living with, type 2 diabetes
• Participants engaged in the Champions for Change programme
• Individuals from communities in Greenwich affected by health inequalities

Expected Outcomes:

1. Increased understanding of healthy eating and diabetes risk
2. Improved ability to make balanced food choices
3. Enhanced synergy between physical activity and nutrition
4. Development of sustainable healthy habits in participants
