Healthy Bones for a Healthy Body: An Osteoporosis Update

It is reported that 66% of people aged 50 years and over have osteoporosis or osteopenia, resulting in 183,000 broken bones each year due to poor bone health.

With people living outside major cities in Australia having higher hip fracture rates than people living in cities, along with reduced access to bone densitometry and osteoporosis specialists, it is important to discuss the challenges the local community is facing.

• Apply osteoporosis screening guidelines to patients based on age and risk factors
• Diagnose osteoporosis based on the two diagnostic criteria
• Screen for secondary causes of osteoporosis
• Initiate initial treatment for osteoporosis based on severity and co-morbidities
• Determine appropriate monitoring strategies for those with or at high risk of osteoporosis

• Learn when and how to ask for help when GP based strategies don’t work
