This public lecture, hosted by the Edinburgh Sports Medicine Research Centre(ESMRC), is part of the Stewart Alan Robertson Lecture Series funded by the Robertson Endowment.

About this event

This public lecture is organised by the ESMRC. It is a multi and inter-disciplinary centre of research excellence dedicated to advancing sports medicine, injury prevention and athlete health. ESMRC brings together academic and clinical expertise to improve short-and long-term health outcomes for everyone from elite to recreational athlete.

The ESMRC is leading research and advancing practice and policy in Scotland, the UK, and internationally. ESMRC is one of the two UK sites that form the UK Collaborating Centre on Injury and Illness Prevention in Sport (UKCCIIS). UKCCIIS is an International Olympic Committee (IOC) appointed research centre, one of just eleven centres globally.


About the speaker

Dr Jane Thornton is currently the Director of Health, Medicine and Science at the International Olympic Committee (IOC), where she leads global strategies focused on athlete health protection, injury and illness prevention, safeguarding, and the promotion of physical activity to improve population health worldwide. A former Canadian international rower and World Champion, Dr Thornton brings lived elite-sport experience to her work in athlete health and performance. Throughout her career, her work has predominantly focused on long-term athlete health, female athlete health, and the role of sport and physical activity in preventing chronic disease.

Dr Thornton holds both an MD and PhD. She has delivered medical coverage at various Olympic Games and World Championship events and has contributed over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the field of sport medicine. Other prestigious leadership roles Dr Thornton has held include Editor of the British Journal of Sport and Exercise Medicine, Canadian Research Chair in Injury Prevention and Physical Activity for Health, and President of the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
