Healing Along the Bayou:
Traiteurs and the Living Tradition of Cajun Folk Medicine
📅 Saturday, October 10th
🕓 4:00 PM–5:00 PM
📍 Rapides Parish Library – Westside Regional Library
5416 Provine Place
Alexandria, LA 71303
For generations, traiteurs have served Louisiana communities through a distinctive tradition of faith healing, prayer, sacred gesture, and traditional remedies. But where did this practice come from, how has it survived, and what does the work of a traiteur actually involve?
This presentation explores the history of Louisiana’s traiteur tradition, tracing its roots to older healing practices in France and related traditions that continue in the Old World today. We’ll examine how the practice is passed from one generation to the next and preserved within families and communities. We’ll also look at the healing methods of traiteurs, including prayers, sacred gestures, laying on of hands, ritual actions, and traditional herbal and household remedies.
Whether you are interested in Cajun history, Louisiana folklore, traditional medicine, faith healing, genealogy, French heritage, or the living culture of Acadiana, this presentation offers an opportunity to better understand a tradition that has quietly endured for generations.
