He Hākari Kōrero: A Feast of Stories
Step into an experience where heritage is not just told, it is felt, explored & shared. As part of the Auckland Heritage Festival 2026 - Tastes of Tāmaki: A Heritage Feast, He Hākari Kōrero invites you to gather at Te Wharekura for a unique, sensory-led journey into the stories of this place.
Here, the idea of a ‘feast’ expands beyond food, becoming a rich offering of knowledge, memory & connection. Facilitated by Cassius Makoare, this free, one-hour kōrero creates space for open conversation, curiosity & shared learning, with respect to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, whose whakapapa & presence anchor this whenua.
This is an immersive, hands-on storytelling experience. Expect to engage your senses, touching natural materials, breathing in the scent of earth & plant life. The gathering will close with a demonstration of the pūkaea, a traditional Māori trumpet whose resonant call once signalled the planting & harvesting of kūmara.
Together, you’ll explore traditional & contemporary approaches to growing & gathering kai, from the careful cultivation of kūmara, hue & other crops, to the rhythms of planting, tending & harvesting. The kōrero will open conversations around the use of pesticides & fertilisers, examining both modern practices & natural, customary methods grounded in observation, seasonality, & respect for the whenua.
Food is a universal language, revealing stories of migration, resilience, innovation & manaakitanga. Te Wharekura is a space dedicated to learning, connection & te ao Māori perspectives & this experience invites you to reconsider how heritage can be ‘consumed’ - not just through eating, but through listening, sensing & meaningful exchange.
