Kognisjon Bryggeri "Name a Beer After Your Pet" to benefit UPAWS is BACK!!!
Hazel is teaming up with Kognisjon to celebrate Valentine's Day in a big way! Hazel's uses her cattle dog instincts to use regularly as the official mascot of the Frost Coast Plunge Posse- a group of cold water immersion enthusiasts who plunge nearly every day of the year in Lake Superior. She greets each person at the beach prior to entering the water and again as they exit. On February 14th, she is looking to utilize her herding instincts to bring beer enthusiasts together to spread the love this Valentine's Day. Join us for the release of "Hazel's Love Potion," a chocolate stout brewed by Kognisjon Bryggeri to benefit UPAWS! Enjoy a night-out with your gal pals and buddies, or a date night to celebrate Valentine's Day. We'll have live music by the Daydreamers, complimentary desserts to pair with your pint of "Hazel's Love Potion," and food specials at the Third Street Grill available.
A portion of each pint sale and the proceeds of limited edition "Hazel's Love Potion" shirts will benefit UPAWS. Help spread the love this Valentine's Day as we celebrate Hazel and the love she spreads on a daily basis.

Event Information and History:
At the UPAWS Annual Cause for Paws Gala on October 20, 2016, Cognition Brewing Company donated a live auction item, "Name a Beer After Your Pet." This was one of the most successful live auction items in UPAWS history! In fact, not one but THREE attendees bid the same amount, naming three separate specialty brews after their beloved pets. In 2017, we enjoyed specialty brews in honor of Fester Snaggle Tooth's German Style Altbier, Thor’s Hammer American Stout, and Indy’s Last Crusade Belgian Tripel. The auction item was so popular that Cognition offered to do it again at our October 2017 Cause for Paws.
In 2018, we honored Diesel’s Shop Dog Shandy, Sami’s Lazy Day IPA, Margie’s Journey Blueberry Wheat Ale, and Dexter’s Black Tie Stout! Each of these specialty brews had something in common--they were all as unique and special as the story of the pet they were named after. They also all helped benefit UPAWS in a big way! Supporters came out in abundance to try the limited specialty beers, and share in a night of celebration for these pets loved so very much they even had a beer named after them!
At Cause for Paws 2018, we celebrated this unique idea, which has raised a substantial amount of money to help animals find their forever homes!
The 2019 Beer Collection kicked off with “Coco Chanel’s Pretty Pilsner,” a Czech-style Pilsner brewed by Cognition Brewery to Benefit UPAWS. In July 2019, we launched the second 2019 specialty brew, "Blu Su Lu Ru," a blueberry hard seltzer named after four dogs. We rounded off the 2019 "Name a Beer After Your Pet" specialty brews to benefit UPAWS with "Bambina's Got Her Buzz On!" A Honey Brown ale with the perfect amount of sweetness—just like Bambina herself!
This auction item has been so popular that Cognition offered to do it again as a live auction item at Cause for Paws 2019. Due to COVID-19, these three donors have waited a tremendous amount of time to finally have their beer debuted. We were finally able to debut “Merle’s Working Dog Blues” in 2022. A bohemian style pilsner as mellow as its namesake. This was the first beer distributed and canned to benefit UPAWS!
In the summer of 2023 we debuted the very first beer at Cognition Brewing’s new location: Kognisjon Bryggeri. “UPAWS Staff Pack” a raspberry wit-bier to honor the wonderful staff members over the years who have cared for countless animals in need.
In 2024, we debuted “Sal’s Golden Ale”. A Golden Ale with a hint of lemon and honey as comforting as its namesake. Sal is a familiar face in Marquette through her work as a therapy dog and part of the original pack of Wild Pups at NMU. A three-time canine good citizen recipient and the award-winning UPAWS Silver Tag and Purple Paw Award recipient.
In 2025, we debuted "George's Superior Sunset". George reminded us all to take a moment to enjoy the good stuff. A good beer, a Lake Superior sunset, and of course rescuing animals like him. George was transferred from a high K*ll shelter in Texas and rescued to enjoy the shores of Lake Superior. This cherry wheat ale was a lot like George himself. A social guy loved by all!
