The Cathedral Singers will be joined by a string ensemble consisting of violins and cellos to play Haydn's "Mass for St. John of God," with organist Dr. Heather Hinton, at the 11 a.m. worship service at North UMC on Sunday, May 19. Written between 1777-1778, Haydn composed it for the Brothers of Mercy's chapel organ and it was dedicated to their patron saint. The work is composed in the tradition of the missa brevis, in which some of the longer movements, particularly the Gloria and Credo, are condensed – i.e. the four voices of the chorus sing different words of the text simultaneously.
