A selection of 28 full size quilts from the prestigious Colorado-based Hite collection, from the late 19th Century through the 2000s, showing a wide variety of technique in the textile arts and the historical importance of quilt making. Like many programs at Loveland Museum, this exhibition amplifies the way history and art can seamlessly unite to educate and inspire. Quiltmakers gleaned elements from religion, legends, or the islands’ natural beauty and incorporated them into an appliqued overlay on the quilt.
Originally brought to the islands by New England missionaries, Hawaiian appliqué quilts are unique for their “snowflake” designs. Imbued with the myths and traditions of the native Hawaiian population and references to the plant life and mythology of the islands, Hawaiian quilts are among the most visually striking of all quilt designs. Since most quilts are only two colors, this more keenly highlights the detail and intrigue of the radiating patterns of the Comb and Fan, Orchids, Palm Trees, and others that give an immediate sense of the makers mana (spirit or power of a person) and love.
Hawaiian quilting is Love. It is your deepest, sincerest feelings, Coming forth from your heart through your hands on to a master piece of Hawaiian ingenuity. And it is your and
only yours to share for eternity.
