About this Event
HAWAIIAN MISSION HOUSES MUSEUM TOUR
The Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives offers a fascinating look into a pivotal time in Hawaiʻi’s history. Once home to early Protestant missionaries, these preserved homes sit at the crossroads of Hawaiian aliʻi leadership, education, language, and faith during the 19th century.
On this guided tour, participants will explore beautifully restored historic houses and hear stories of old Honolulu while learning how formal education took root in the islands. During this period, Hawaiʻi achieved an extraordinary literacy rate—estimated at over 90%—making it one of the most literate societies in the world at the time.
This experience invites participants to better understand how education, culture, and everyday life intersected to shape Hawaiʻi as we know it today.
Please note: Participants must be able to walk and stand without assistance and navigate narrow and steep stairways in certain areas of the site.
Tour Host: Merle O’Neill
This tour is offered at a special reduced price thanks to support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority Kūkulu Ola Program, which helps make authentic cultural experiences accessible to both Hawaiʻi residents and visitors.
