In 1890, brothers Zack and Clay Cloyd built a grand hotel in Red Boiling Springs to house the thousands of visitors who came to take the healing mineral waters. Fire destroyed it in 1924. It was rebuilt in red brick in 1927, and in the decades that followed it became a boys' summer camp and, in the late 1980s, the home of a group whose practices centered on contacting the dead.
The dead, it seems, never left.
Sarah Cloyd, the daughter of one of the founders, died in her adolescence. Room 37 was hers, and it is the center of activity in the hotel. Guests wake to a dark figure standing at the foot of the bed, feel the bedframe shake beneath them, and hear a small voice in the dark asking them to play.
Staff hear whistling in empty corridors, believed to be Mr. Cloyd himself. A young boy named Edwin, said to have drowned in the hotel pool, is seen playing with a ball. In the dining room, the piano plays by itself and guests have been scratched and had their hair pulled.
