Haunted Oakland

There is an Oakland where the apparition of a woman appears in the mist at Joaquin Miller Park after dark, where the doorbell at the two-story Clarke Mansion at 16th and Castro begins clanging incessantly just after midnight, and where the Camron-Stanford House, one of the last Victorian homes that once lined Lake Merritt, has urged more than one living visitor to "get out." These are just a few of the stories that blur the line between the living and the dead that have lingered in Oakland for generations, passed between those who have witnessed things they still can't explain.

Join us for an evening of storytelling with Beth Winegarner and Courtney Minick, hosts of Dead Reckoning: the podcast where death isn't the end of the story. The hosts of the San Francisco-based podcast will share local ghost stories, explore the legends surrounding some of Oakland's most notable residents, and uncover the histories that linger long after death. Courtney Minick is a storyteller with a career spanning technology, law, politics, and creative media based in San Francisco. She is the creator of a multi-platform storytelling project that explores history, folklore, and the way the buried past continues to shape our present including the series.

Beth Winegarner is a journalist and writer who’s contributed to the New York Times, the New Yorker, The Guardian, and many others. She is the author of several books, most recently San Francisco’s Forgotten Cemeteries: A Buried History and Swim Poems, and she is the co-host of the Dead Reckoning podcast.
