Boroughs of the Dead: Macabre New York City History Tours founder Andrea Janes will be in conversation with author Hope Tarr for a lively (and deadly!) discussion of some of New York City’s most prominent Irish ghost stories. The history of this city, as many know, is deeply intertwined with the story of Irish immigration to America. And where there is life, death will surely follow, meaning that Gotham has more than its fair share of spooky tales featuring Irish-American spirits.
From the hidden Potter’s Field of Washington Square where the body of an 18th century immigrant from County Kildare reposes, to a haunted Hell’s Kitchen tavern, to the scary tales of North Brother Island where Typhoid Mary once reluctantly resided, these tales will induce a shiver, and perhaps a backward glance or two over the shoulder on the way home.
We’ll also discuss the ghosts of the Irish servants at the Merchant’s House Museum, the strange tales associated with Nellie Bly’s old stomping grounds at the former Roosevelt Island insane asylum, the tales of Irish-descended Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote The Raven while living in New York, and the many ghosts of Belfast’s own RMS Titanic, many of whom linger in New York City. We may even have time for a few ghosts of the Irish-American Historical Society itself, if they’re in the mood to say hello…
So join us for a night like no other night of the year, on a holiday with many Irish roots, as the candles flicker, the old year wanes, and the veil thins… Happy Halloween!
