Harvey Mandel has been The Snake since his Chicago days running with Charlie Musselwhite, and the nickname fits the way he plays, a line that never quite lands where you expect it. Born in Detroit in 1945 and raised just outside Chicago, he made his first record with Musselwhite's Southside Band in 1966.

He joined Canned Heat in 1969 and played Woodstock in his third gig with the band, then spent two years with John Mayall. When Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones, Mandel auditioned, and he stayed on the record: that is him on Hot Stuff and Memory Motel from Black and Blue. Two sets on Mason Street from one of the genuine innovators of the electric guitar.
