About this Event
The contrast between the musical traditions of Colonial America and those of Great Britain during the reign of George III is striking. While the colonists were embracing folk songs and ballads to express their frustrations and aspirations for independence, British loyalists and the Monarchy remained avid patrons of classical music.
Harmonies of Majesty: Music from the Court of George III provides a glimpse into the cultural and ideological landscape of the time when music echoed the hopes, dreams, and conflicts of those loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution. Through compositions by Mozart and Haydn performed by acclaimed fortepianist Daniel Adam Maltz, and context provided by hisotorian Robert Allison, this program offers a nuanced understanding of the social and political dynamics of the American Revolutionary era through the lens of music.
Haydn: Sonata in A Major, Hob. XVI:30
