About this Event
Join us for a fun and hands-on outdoor adventure as we explore the incredible nests birds build—and create one of our own!
Families will learn about the different types of nests birds use and why they build them the way they do. We’ll examine real nest examples, then head out on a guided hike (approximately 0.7–1 mile) to look for nests along the trails.
In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, we’ll honor our national bird, the majestic Bald Eagle! At the end of our hike, everyone will work together to build a life-sized eagle nest using natural materials from the park’s natural play area. Teamwork, creativity, and curiosity are encouraged!
Plus, our YMCA STEM Team will be leading an additional hands-on activity, giving families another opportunity to explore science and nature in an engaging, interactive way!

Who’s the audience: All ages and abilities, some trails are not paved and have gravel, so assistance may be needed. Building with sticks and logs may be difficult, but there will be lots of people to help assist with it. Luckily, it can be adapted!

Rain or Shine?: Yes
Recommended items to bring, things to wear, etc: Closed toed shoes, layers, gloves possibly. Binoculars will be provided.
Is this program wheelchair/stroller friendly?: Mostly, the natural play area is not paved, it has small gravel pebbles, but is relatively easy for wheels to move on.
Does this program have ready access to running water? At the beginning in the restrooms. Otherwise, we will be on a trail with no water.
Is this program in the sun, shade, or other outdoor elements we should make families aware of?: Mostly shaded as we are in the woods, but since it’s outdoors we are completely exposed to the weather.
What is the length of the hike? (if a hiking or program that involves walking): approx 0.7-1 mile depending on the trail we take
What type of path is the hike on? (gravel, dirt, rocks, etc): If needed, we will mostly hike a paved trail (if there are no wheel chair users we will be hiking completely gravel paths). The natural play area has small, loose gravel that strollers have no issue with.
