How to balance striving for excellence with an inclusive culture: exploring some of the challenges and solutions.
About this Event

Event Details: DfE Open Fortnight for London Teachers and Educational Professionals.

St Mary Magdalene Academy is an all-through inner London comprehensive school serving an urban complex community. Our FSM sits at 41% and yet our outcomes and attendance for all key groups sit above local and national. Breaking 70% for 5+ at GCSE in 2025 was an important moment. At the heart of these successes is an inclusive culture where pupils feel part of a community that is striving for excellence. We have focussed on very clear expectations enshrined in the ‘SMMA Way’, at the same time as building on the notion of the school as family. This inclusive culture supports high quality teaching and learning and consequently excellent outcomes for all. In this session we will see the SMMA Way in action in the secondary school, unpack the key ingredients of our culture and explore some of the ongoing challenges for all schools.
