ARTEFAKTER
15 JANUARY – 15 FEBRUARY 2026
In his art, Hans Jörgen Johansen moves effortlessly across diverse genres—photography, painting, and sculpture. His works combines precision, logic, and a subtly twisted humor, creating fictional worlds that are often uncanny yet undeniably captivating. Each piece stands out like a fragment of an ongoing investigation.
In his practice, parallel worlds emerge through objects, models, casts, andvisual representations. By working across media, Johansen explores both the material and the imagined, with photographs of objects and models offering interpretations of the mental landscapes he navigates and brings to life.
In the exhibition "Artifacts", Johansen invites viewers to see our present through the lens of the future. We stand on the threshold of a new chronology, entering a world full of enigmas and shifting meanings. What is it that we are truly seeing?
Through an archaeological approach to the layers of art and consumer culture, Johansen reveals the hidden mystique of everyday objects. Viewers encounter disenchanting luxury items—bags, fabrics, chairs—arranged in the gallery as an archive of recovered artifacts. Hung, displayed, and mounted, these decoded objects hover between thing and artwork.
As in previous exhibitions, Johansen destabilizes the objects and spaces he engages with. His pieces are set in motion, floating in the tension between relic, everyday item, and art. Parallel temporal and spatial structures intertwine, forming a subtle aesthetic of transformation.
Modernity’s industrially produced objects bear traces of a swift, unpredictable hand. Times and expressions overlap. Three-dimensional forms meet the two-dimensional; sculpture and painting speak as one. Past and emerging present converge. Where are we now, in the present, or in the future?
The exhibition plays not only with time but also with scale—from the intimate detail of a belt bag or branded bag to the mass production of architecture on a planetary scale. In addition to the objects on display, photographs document several “performers.” In "The Assemblers", these figures seek meaning in fragments of Arne Jacobsen chairs, while in "The Groundworkers", they lay the foundations for the lost world of modernity.
