From MHW Founder Heather:
I was inspired to create a Handy Woman Master Series looking around my own sad and sore Farm House. It needs A LOT of work. And while I’m capable of woodworking, I’m not confident in diagnosing and completing major repairs. Wade, my husband and MHW co-founder is capable, but as a professional Shipwright, he spends 3-6 months away. Our house requires both of us working at a certain level of competency to fix the worst of it and get ahead ahead of major repairs- and I’m not at that level.
And regardless of all that above – I don’t like it when I want to do something, but I don’t know how to do it. I have been looking at my kitchen floor for the past two years with a mad desire to tear up the crappy plywood. I think there’s a good layer underneath it, but I’m not sure. And what to do if not? What if I expose a rotting floor joist? What if I tear into the cellar floor?
And lets take Wade entirely out of the equation. Lets pretend I don’t have an incredibly Handy Husband who can and does, when push comes to shove, get me out of a bind. If I owned this house by myself, I would be facing major problems – I’d be way in over-my-head. That makes me very uncomfortable and so I decided to do something about it.
Reaching out and discussing this idea with Aaron our Carpentry Instructor we came up with a curriculum plan designed to get Women to the point of diagnosing and tackling major home repairs by themselves or with minimal help.
**I’m going to sidebar here I say “minimal help” as built into every Women Focused class is the idea of Peer Support; It is my sincere hope that through this course in particular that you will be building a Network of Handy Women – your ***Broad Squad – who you can call to come and help you with your home project.
***Broad Squad (definition according to Heather, as coined by her close group of women in Los Angeles) a group of tough, awesome, wonderful capable women who when called upon run from all directions to help reason out problems, offer strength & hope and are reminiscent of the no-bullshit-women Heather grew up watching on TV in the 70’s who wore fabulous pantsuits, kicked bad guys, saved other women, and carried .38 specials in their pocket-books, had feathered hair, and wore red lipstick
