Delhi Ki Garmee said: “Bas karo Heritage Walks!”

So we said: “Fine. We’ll take it Indoors!!”

*Presenting: MuseoMay 2026*

Our annual, month-long series of cooler, quieter, story-filled weekends inside Delhi’s most epic museums (because 18th May = World Museums Day, obviously we had to go big!)

For our 5th MuseoMay walk, we head towards The National Gallery of Modern Art - to walk through a curated journey through the collection exploring labour, memory, and the people often left unseen within Indian art history.

Conceived during this month of Labour Day (1st May), and from emerging loud conversations around labour, visibility of class politics, and working conditions across NCR, Team DBF brings Hands That Build ….a curated walk through the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, NGMA.

This walk traces how Indian Art rapidly shifted its gaze - from the royal, mythological, and elite imagination of artists like Raja Ravi Varma, to exploring Western philosophies and all through to the nationalist and historical visions of Abanindranath Tagore, and eventually toward the overlooked realities of ordinary people: workers, farmers, artisans, performers, homemakers and labouring bodies brought to life by artists such as Ramkinkar Baij and others.

Moving through paintings, sculptures, and visual movements across different schools of Indian modern art, the walk unfolds through touch, movement, texture, exhaustion, resilience, and memory.

Along the way, we ask: When did Indian Art begin noticing the invisible hands that build society, which in turn sprouted into new art?

More than an art walk, Hands That Build is a veteran Delhi-based Artist’s invitation to explore Indian Art's known & less-known conversations around class, dignity and forgotten social histories.

About the Narrator

Resisting the increasingly mechanical rhythms of contemporary urban life, Snigdha Banerjee finds herself drawn toward folklore, craft traditions, and the lived textures of Indian cultural memory. An alumna of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and the National Institute of Design, she is a multidisciplinary artist, design educator, and founder of Ehmaqana.

Her practice moves across visual, narrative, and performing arts through storytelling, material culture, and public experiences — often exploring the relationship between memory, identity, labour, and myth.
