Hands-On Film Directing

CSIF is partnering with DGC Alberta for your chance to practice film directing. Led by Calgary based film director Ted Stenson (Events Transpiring Before, During, and After a High School Basketball Game) this workshop will be broken into three sections.

First, some theory on how best to prepare as a director. This includes what work should be done before your shoot, and how to run an efficient set.

Second, observation of a scene. Participants will watch in real time as a director works with cast and crew. In-between takes there will be time for questions.

Lastly, the bulk of the course will have participants breaking into small groups to work a scene with actors. A few pages of a script will be sent out beforehand. Each group member will be expected to get hands-on with either being a camera operator and 1st assistant director when other members of their group are directing.

By the end of the class you'll have received experience working through your own process and observing how other filmmakers work.

Note: the objective is not to have a perfectly crafted final scene, but rather to get experience working with actors and crew in a controlled environment.

Participants will be provided a basic digital camera, tripod, and light to work with.
