Ron Nicolaysen is a New Yorker with a lifetime career as an internationally published and collected fine art / commercial photographer. This will be his first solo exhibition in Oslo, Norway, featuring an international collection of portraits of various workers entitled “Hands of Labor” (“Håndverkernes hender”)
BACKGROUND
Born and raised in Manhattan to Norwegian and Italian immigrants, Ron began to pursue photography seriously during his undergraduate years at Beloit College in Wisconsin, from which he graduated in 1971. Subsequently Ron returned home to New York City, where he took seminars and workshops from leading photographers, several of whom had a great influence on his work, including Harry Callahan, Lee Friedlander, Duane Michals, and Ansel Adams.
From early 1980's through 1990's Ron lived in Paris, Milan and New York City while working as a fashion photographer for magazines such as Vogue (American and Italian), Glamour, Mademoiselle, Grazia, Bazaar (American and Italian).
In the late 1990's his work shifted towards fine art and documentary photography. In 2002 he spent two months on a research vessel in the Southern Ocean off Antarctica documenting an oceanographic research project funded by the National Science Foundation. In 2009 Ron worked on a United Nations project, Division for the Advancement of Women, which was exhibited at the United Nations. These were portraits of recovered victims from human trafficking.
Ron has participated in several solo and group shows in the United States, Italy and Lebanon and taught at Pratt Institute, Fashion Institute of Technology and international photographic workshops.
He is currently is concentrating on images below sea level: http://www.seavoyeur.com
ARTIST STATEMENT - Specific to this Show
“I use a Linhof 6 X 17 medium format panoramic camera. I've chosen this format specifically to give equal weight to the subject (person) and his/her environment. As opposed to the classic portrait, where the subject typically fills the frame, my images provide a richness of detail in the environment surrounding the person that enhances our understanding of who she/he is.
My father was born in Norway and my mother in Italy. I have been fortunate, over the years, to visit both of these countries, and to know my heritage. It has also allowed me to see America from different vantage points. Being able to look at the United States from the outside is an invaluable experience that I wish we all could have. I believe it is increasingly important that we as a society and as individuals step back from generalizations. In our web-connected world, we are paradoxically viewing others two dimensionally, not just visually but also intellectually.”
