3.0 NBCC-approved CE hrs., in-person
Monday, November 24, 2025, 8:30 am - 11:45 am. (CT)
Lipscomb University, Nashville, TN Ezell Center 301

Speaker: Terry Casey, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, HSP

Decription

This in-person interactive training is designed for all experience levels of counseling and mental health professionals. It is more important than ever to be competent in navigating the complexities of the various laws, licensing rules, and codes of ethics. Participants will become equipped to sort out virtually any problematic ethical or legal situation by applying Dr. Casey's practical model. Ethics CE programs do not have to be tedious or boring. Many past participants have stated that they enjoyed the small group interactive format and that they even had fun!

Interactive groups

Interacting with other clinicians is an important component of this seminar. Through small group and whole group discussions of clinical vignettes relating to timely issues, participants will learn from/share with colleagues while sharpening their critical thinking and decision-making skills. The small groups also provide opportunities for connecting with other counseling professionals.

Examples of topics to be addressed:

  • Decision-making process step-by-step guide
  • HIPAA business associates — What you don't know can hurt you
  • Power differentials & dual relationships — unrealized hazards
  • Social media and clients — thin ice for therapists
  • Supervision-related pitfalls
  • Interstate compacts — status and future
  • Minors: Consent and access to records
  • Subpoenas & court orders

Bonus materials

In addition to the program materials, participants will receive supplemental materials. These materials may include, for example:

  • Flowchart for handling subpoenas
  • HIPAA Business Associate Agreement (example)
  • The five legal provisions for practicing across state lines (summary)
  • Social media and communication policy (example)
  • Clinical supervision agreement (example)
  • The HIPAA Notice (example)

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to . . .

1. Identify and describe the five primary perspectives of the Multiple Perspective Model© of ethical decision-making.

2. Discuss how to understand and navigate professional codes of ethics, federal and state laws, and licensing regulations.

3. Determine ethical and legal courses of action for vignettes through use of the Multiple Perspective Model.

Arriving on Campus

It is best to plan to arrive early on campus. On November 24, classes will not be in session due to the Thanksgiving break. However, parking after 8:00 a.m. could still be a challenge if other campus events are going on. The seminar will be held in Ezell Center 301 (#2 on the map below). The closest parking is the lot [P] immediately in front of the Shinn Center (#1). Parking lots P2 & P1 are also nearby.

On-campus food
Since university classes will not be in session due to the Thanksgiving break, on-campus food vendors may not be operating under their regular hours. Many past participants have found it best to bring their own coffee, water, and snacks.
