Handling Despondent or Suicidal Callers

Our call-takers are on the frontline of helping despondent and suicidal callers. We will explore communication with various types of despondent callers, including adults, youth, and the elderly in crisis. We will study suicidal erosion, warning signs of suicidal ideology, and the PLAID PALS clinical assessment tool. The course will go in-depth into active listening skills to establish a rapport and earn the caller's trust, as well as verbal containment techniques. We will also train on the real danger of suicide-by-cop as well as the U.S. government’s PREVENTS program.  

Riveting and thought-provoking, students will listen to and dissect several calls under the direction of the instructor.
