HANDEL’S VOICES - Opera, oratorio and the organ he envisioned

Few instruments can bring us as close to Handel’s own musical imagination as the historic organ of St James’ Church, Great Packington. Built by Thomas Parker to specifications set out by Handel himself in a letter of 1749, the organ was intended for Charles Jennens, Handel’s close collaborator and the librettist of Messiah. After Jennens’s death, the instrument passed to the Earls of Aylesford and eventually found its home at Great Packington, preserving an extraordinary tangible link with Handel and his circle.
This programme brings that historic instrument into dialogue with the human voice through a sequence of arias drawn from Handel’s operas and oratorios. From the serenity of Ombra mai fu and the vulnerability of Lascia ch’io pianga to the darkness of Total eclipse and the valedictory beauty of Jephtha, the music traces a path through love, longing, sleep, loss and transcendence. In these intimate surroundings, the organ takes the place of an orchestra not merely as an accompaniment, but as a second voice: responding, colouring and breathing with the singer. Its distinctive sonority allows Handel’s music to be heard through a sound-world that the composer himself helped to shape. The encounter is therefore more than a historically informed performance: instrument and repertoire are reunited through a direct connection to Handel’s own artistic world. Music conceived for the theatre, the oratorio stage and private devotion acquires a new intimacy, revealing the extraordinary expressive range of Handel’s writing for the voice.
