Quiltmakers and quilt lovers are invited to join the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) for a special celebration of Kentucky’s rich quilting tradition, with a focus on historical quilts while also honoring contemporary quilts and quilt-making methods.
This one-of-a-kind event brings together historians, curators, and textile experts for a day devoted to the artistry, history, and legacy of quilts. Enjoy a dynamic panel discussion featuring Linda LaPinta, Linda Slye, Lenna DeMarco, and Maureen Lane (Curator of Museum Collections at the Filson Historical Society).
In a rare and historic moment, KHS and the Kentucky Highlands Museum and Discovery Center will reunite for the first time Elizabeth Roseberry Mitchell’s Graveyard Quilt Top (1836) with her completed Graveyard Quilt (1843), one of the most requested and beloved pieces in the KHS collection. KHS Senior Curator Jennifer Downs will discuss the significance of these quilts. Because of their age and fragility, these extraordinary textiles are carefully preserved and seldom placed on public display. Don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to see these rarely exhibited, treasured quilts together and up close.
In addition to the panel, hear from special guest speaker Sandy Staebell, retired Kentucky Museum curator, who will share her expertise and insights into Kentucky’s quilting heritage.
Guests are also invited to:
*Bring a family heirloom quilt for analysis by textile historian Victoria Coleman
*Visit with exhibitors from the Kentucky Artisan Center, Kentucky Arts Council, National Quilt Museum, KHS, and more
*Take a guided “Quilt Highlights” tour in KHS’s permanent exhibition, A Kentucky Journey
*Connect and network with fellow quilt enthusiasts from across the Commonwealth
Whether you’re a seasoned quiltmaker or simply cherish the stories stitched into fabric, this event offers a rare opportunity to experience Kentucky’s quilting heritage up close.
Book Signing: Linda LaPinta will attend and sign copies of Kentucky Quilts and Quiltmakers. Bring your own copy, or contact the KHS 1792 Museum Store at 502-782-8120 or [email protected] to reserve a copy.
Lunch: Boxed lunches can be purchased in advance during registration. Attendees are also welcome to have lunch on their own or bring their own meals.
