Hanafuda Pilina

Hanafuda Hawaiʻi's founder, Helen Nakano, will tell us the story of Hanafuda Pilina. These cards turn the game of Hanafuda into a tale about the many different indigenous and invasive plants and animals in the Hawaiian Islands. After that, you'll get to learna nd play Hanafuda!

Did you know that the name Hanafuda translates to flower cards in Japanese, reflecting the beautiful floral designs that adorn each cards. The word Pilina for the Pilina Hanafuda cards come from the Hawaiian language meaning to bond or to connect, capturing the spirit of the game as a means of bringing people together with nature.

Pre-registration for this program is advised due to limited seating. Please contact the Kaimukī Public Library at (808)733-8422 or come in-person at the Reference Desk to register. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible.
