Halloween: A Harvest Celebration

Halloween has its origins in ancient autumn harvest festivals particularly the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “SAH-win”) celebrated over 2000 years ago. As summer ended and winter began communities gathered to bring in the final harvest light bonfires and celebrate the abundance of the season.

When Christianity spread through Europe the Church established All Saints’ Day (also called All Hallows’ Day) on November 1st to honour Christian saints and martyrs. The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve eventually shortened to “Halloween.” Many harvest traditions blended with Christian observances during this time.

Irish and Scottish immigrants brought these autumn customs to America in the 1800s where Halloween evolved into a community-centred holiday focused on:

Harvest celebrations with seasonal foods like apples pumpkins and corn

Neighborhood gatherings that brought communities together

Costumes and creativity as families crafted outfits together

Charitable traditions like trick-or-treating which originally involved giving food to the needy

Today’s Halloween is primarily a secular family-friendly celebration of fall where children:

Dress up in imaginative costumes

Enjoy autumn treats and seasonal activities

Participate in community events

Celebrate creativity and neighbourhood togetherness

The holiday celebrates the joy of the harvest season and community spirit—wholesome traditions families have enjoyed for generations.

* Because South African seasons are the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere we celebrate Halloween in the spring and the spring celebration of Easter in the autumn.

** No fireworks or loud bangs will be part of this festival
