Trick or treat? Let us treat you to a real Hallowe'en experience filled with old customs and traditions at the Folk Museum. Celebrate Hallowe'en for real at the Folk Museum from Tuesday 29th to Thursday 31st October. Discover the origins, traditions and customs of the spookiest time of year, a celebration derived from the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced: Sow-wen).
Watch traditional turnip carving demonstrations, get hands-on at our Hallowe'en craft stations and listen to tales of Jack O Lantern in the RIC Barracks. Learn about old Samhain folklore in The Rectory and watch eerie NI Screen Archives in the Picture House. Look out for the Armagh Rhymers & Wren Boys, dressed in traditional masks and costumes. Meet a real witch this Samhain - Elsie De Danann is a local folk herbalist and Draoí. Come along to learn about traditional folk cures and remedies and wonder at their magical crafts and curiosities (Halloween day only).. You might even discover what the future holds for you in a cabbage reading at Coradreenan Farmhouse!
As always, you can explore our authentic exhibit buildings, and meet our makers from the Blacksmith and Basketmaker to the Woolweaver and Carpenter. We’ll also have colcannon in Tea Lane, barmbrack in Bank House, and apple pie in the Parochial House for you to taste.
